The Spirit Strives With Jacob

Jacob has encountered God en route to Haran, to obtain a wife from his father's family. He then spends twenty years of labour being rewarded with two wives and their maids, eleven sons and one daughter, and much livestock, menservants and maidservants. He then sets out, under the instruction of Yahweh, to return to Canaan. During all this time the Spirit of God has striven with him in the process of delivering him from himself, his strength, his guile, and his natural wisdom, preparatory to giving him the blessing of God, and changing his name to Israel.
