According to the theology of his day Job struggled first with the unjust suffering of the righteous as well as the prosperity of the wicked. This then was brought sickenly close to home in Job's own experience when he lost everything he owned as well as his health and friends. This provoked a struggle with the living God whom Job trusted implicitly, assured as he was of the unimpeachable righteousness and power of God, and the paradoxical conviction that all that befell him came from the hand of this same God.
